Shirley C. Wilson, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, was called home to began her eternal rest on April 13, 2020. She was predeceased by her husband, Garland Wilson Sr., her daughter, Virginia Rivers, and her brother, James Gwathey.

Shirley was born on December 2, 1939 to Lelia and Aaron Gwathney in Portsmouth, Virginia.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories three children, Shirley Clark (Shelton), Patricia Barksdale and Garland Wilson Jr.; seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Phyllis Johnson and Virginia Holley, and hosts of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Shirley worked as an EKG Tech at Norfolk General Hospital and retired after 21 years of service. She was a loving mother and grandmother who loved to actively be involved in her children's, grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's lives.

On any given day, you could find her peacefully working her word search puzzles or working her lottery numbers to find her next win. She was a giving woman, also a great cook and would feed the world if she could. She was unapologetic at all times.

Although Shirley has gained her heavenly wings, we will carry her in our hearts forever.

The funeral service and burial will be private due to gathering restrictions of COVID-19. A viewing will be held from 10:00 am until 11:45 am Saturday, April 18, 2020 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home.
