IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Vernicia D.
Ruffin
January 8, 1954 – January 31, 2026
It is with profound sadness, yet enduring gratitude for her life, that we commemorate Vernicia Diane Ruffin, who peacefully transitioned from this earthly realm on January 31, 2026, just three weeks after her 72nd birthday.
Vernicia's remarkable journey began on January 8, 1954, in the vibrant city of Norfolk, Virginia. She was a cherished daughter to the late Dezola Ruffin and Jack Maynard, and the third of ten children, a testament to the bustling, loving home she grew up in. Vernicia's formative years were spent in Norfolk, where she attended Booker T. Washington High School, laying the foundation for the resilient spirit she would embody throughout her life.
Affectionately known as "Nisha" to her wide circle of family and friends, Vernicia possessed a unique blend of quiet grace and spirited feistiness, a characteristic that became more pronounced and endearing in her later years. Her personal style was as distinctive as her personality; Nisha had a special fondness for the color red, which she often incorporated into her impeccably coordinated ensembles, always complemented by a matching hair bow or clip. Her signature baby doll socks added a touch of charm and whimsy to her attire, reflecting her youthful heart.
Nisha found solace and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her afternoons were often spent immersed in the captivating world of her beloved soap operas, followed by the intellectual engagement of word searches. A dedicated viewer, her favorite channel was Bounce, where she could watch for hours on end – a routine only interrupted by "the stories."
A pivotal chapter of Nisha's life unfolded when she was 22, as she welcomed twin sons, Antonio and Antwoine, with Larry Wilson. Her love for her family was boundless, but her adoration for children and her role as a grandmother brought her the most profound joy. Nisha would, with loving insistence, call her sons and "demand" that they bring the grandchildren over, cherishing every moment she could spend with them, nurturing their spirits and showering them with affection.
In her later years, Vernicia faced several medical conditions with admirable strength and resilience. After an extended stay in the hospital, she was able to return to the comfort of her beloved home, where she passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family.
Vernicia was preceded in death by her parents, Dezola Ruffin and Jack Maynard; her dear sister, Constance Horton; and her brothers, Percy Ruffin, Vincent Price, and Raymond Price.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for her siblings: sisters Linda Johnson, Remona Outlaw, Valerie Cowell, and Priscilla Kersey; and brother, Jerome Price.
Her memory will be forever treasured by her beloved children, Antonio Ruffin (married to Geneva Scott) and Antwoine Ruffin, both residing in Norfolk, Virginia. She also held a special place in her heart for Cordelia Sayles, whom she embraced as a daughter.
Nisha's spirit lives on through her numerous grandchildren: Antwoine Foust, Antonio Ruffin Jr., Nakayla Ruffin, Tajah Vincent, Nijah Ruffin, Antwoinette Ruffin, Diane Sayles, Vernicia Ruffin, Antwoine Ruffin, Naequan Ruffin, Taeon Ruffin, Keshon Pinkeny, Danell Ruffin, and Dynasia Ruffin.
She was also blessed with a multitude of great-grandchildren: Londyn Grandy, Trinity Vincent, Treasure Vincent, Maliki Ruffin, Judah Jackson, Nylah Sayles, Da'Maj Sayles, Khole Brock, Verlani Rose, and Harmony Gordan.
Vernicia leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless family members and friends whose lives she touched with her unique spirit and unwavering affection. She will be missed beyond measure.
A homegoing service will be held 11:00 am on Monday, February 9, 2026 at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, where viewing will be at 10:00 am the day of the service.
