Virginia Beach - Waverly L. Brinkley, Jr., 90, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014. A native of Roanoke Rapids, NC, he was the husband of Anna Jordan Brinkley and son of the late Waverly and Maude Brinkley.
Following service in the Army during WWII, he graduated from Hampton Institute and received his master's degree in education from Michigan State University. After more than 30 years of teaching at Booker T. Washington High School and Norfolk Technical Vocational Center, he retired from the school system. He then devoted his full efforts to running his own plumbing and heating business.
Waverly was a faithful member of the historic First Baptist Church on Bute Street in Norfolk and an avid supporter of his alma mater, Hampton University.
Left to cherish his memory, is his wife of 60 years, "Anna Lee"; son, Ronald Brinkley (wife Demetria); granddaughters, Daria Mack (husband Karas) and Ebyn Brinkley; and great-granddaughter Carrington Mack; all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, May 17th at Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach with Dr. Robert G. Murray officiating. The viewing will be at Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home in Chesapeake, VA on Friday from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
