On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at 12:09 p.m., heaven welcomed home one of God's faithful generals, Superintendent William Haywood Blanchard. After 106 years of life, love, leadership, and unwavering service to God, family, church, and community, he peacefully entered eternal rest.
To know Superintendent Blanchard witnessed faithfulness in action. He was a man of prayer, wisdom, humility, discipline, and steadfast commitment to the Kingdom of God. Through changing generations, seasons, and circumstances, he remained anchored in his faith and devoted to the work of the Lord. His life was a living testimony that true greatness is measured not by position, but by service.
Born on May 3, 1920, in Edenton, North Carolina, to the late Malachi Phillip and Mary Simpson Blanchard, Superintendent Blanchard's life was shaped by perseverance and purpose from an early age. He spent ten formative years under the care of his grandfather, the late Horace Blanchard, where he learned the values of hard work, integrity, stewardship, and responsibility while helping to tend to the family farm. Those lessons became the foundation upon which he built a remarkable life that influenced countless people for more than a century.
In February 1942, during one of the most pivotal periods in world history, William Haywood Blanchard answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army (Supply Corps) and faithfully served during World War II. His military service reflected the same qualities that would define his entire life—courage, honor, sacrifice, and dedication. Following his honorable discharge in May 1945, he returned home determined to build a life centered on faith, family, and service.
Soon afterward, he married the love of his life, Betty O' Dale Lynch. Together they established their home in the Oakdale community of Chesapeake, VA, where they built a legacy rooted in faith, family, hospitality, and love. Their union was blessed with two sons, William Horace and Kenneth Travis Blanchard.
A lifelong learner and skilled craftsman, Superintendent Blanchard attended Booker T. Washington Night School in Norfolk, Virginia, earning a Carpentry Certification in 1956. His strong work ethic and commitment to excellence led to a distinguished career as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic at the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF) in Norfolk, Virginia. After more than thirty years of dedicated service, he retired in January 1979. Whether repairing aircraft engines, building with his hands, mentoring young people, or serving his community, he believed that every task should be completed with integrity and excellence.
While his professional accomplishments were noteworthy, his greatest calling was ministry.
Having accepted Christ at an early age and reaffirming his faith as an adult in 1949, Superintendent Blanchard dedicated his life to advancing the Kingdom of God. In 1962, he accepted the call to pastor Solid Rock Church of God in Christ in Chesapeake, Virginia. What followed was not merely a pastoral assignment but a ministry of legacy spanning sixty-four years.
For more than six decades, Superintendent Blanchard faithfully stood behind the sacred desk, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ with conviction, compassion, and consistency. He baptized believers, married couples, dedicated children, counseled families, mentored ministers, comforted the bereaved, and encouraged countless individuals through life's triumphs and trials. His ministry was marked by unwavering faithfulness to God's assignment and an enduring love for God's people.
Under his leadership, Solid Rock Church of God in Christ became affectionately known as "The Friends' Headquarters" and embraced the motto, "No Big I's and No Little U's." These were not simply words to him; they reflected in the heart of his ministry. He believed every person deserved dignity, respect, and an opportunity to experience the love of Christ. Saints, visitors, neighbors, community leaders, and strangers alike found a warm welcome within the walls of Solid Rock. Many entered seeking a church and found a family.
Superintendent Blanchard's cherished the annual New Year's Revival that he established with Elder Frank Smith and the New Hope COGIC. For nearly four decades, believers gathered to seek God's direction, renew their faith, and begin each year in prayer and worship. What became a treasured tradition throughout the region reflected his belief that every year should begin in the presence of God. Through these revivals, countless lives were encouraged, strengthened, saved, healed, and inspired.
His proudest ministry accomplishment was building the new Solid Rock church building completely debt-free. At the age of 75, when he was criticized and mocked among the brethren who said it would never happen, he pressed forward, and God remained faithful to him. His conviction was unwavering, and he would often proclaim that “When you get to a certain place in the Lord, you can tell Him when you're ready to go—and for me, 99 and a half won't do." Against all doubt and opposition, God honored him, and the building was completed debt-free—a testament to his trust in God and his refusal to settle for anything less than God's complete will.
Beyond the local church, Superintendent Blanchard faithfully served the Berkeley District of the Iconic VA#2 Jurisdiction of the Churches of God in Christ as Assistant Superintendent and Financial Secretary for more than fifty years. His commitment to district leadership was characterized by integrity, wisdom, and faithful stewardship. For generations, pastors and leaders sought his counsel and depended upon his sound judgment. He became a trusted voice, respected leader, and beloved mentor throughout the district and jurisdiction.
In 2024, at the age of 104, he was elevated to the office of Superintendent. This historic appointment was a testament to a lifetime of faithful service and reflected the deep respect, admiration, and confidence church leadership placed in him. Even in his later years, he continued to lead with grace, wisdom, humility, and strength.
To many, Superintendent Blanchard was more than a pastor or church leader. He was a spiritual father, mentor, counselor, encourager, and friend.
His wisdom was trusted.
His counsel was sought.
His prayers were cherished.
His example inspired generations of pastors, missionaries, ministers, and lay members throughout the Church of God in Christ and beyond.
Though he held many titles throughout his life—Veteran, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Pastor, Asst. Superintendent, Financial Secretary, and Superintendent—perhaps his most cherished title was simply "Servant." He served God faithfully. He served God's people faithfully. And he served until the very end.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty O'Dale Blanchard; his parents, Malachi Phillip and Mary Simpson Blanchard; his grandfather, Horace Blanchard; his six siblings, Cora Blanchard, Malachi Blanchard, Clarine Allen, John Blanchard, Alberta Towns, and Beatrice Goodwin; and his cherished friend and brother-in-law, Jefferson David Allen.
He leaves to celebrate his extraordinary life and carry forward his enduring legacy: his sons, William Horace Blanchard (Angela) and Kenneth Travis Blanchard (Ramona); grandchildren Kenneth Blanchard Jr. (Courtney), Karisa Young (Brian), Aaron Blanchard (Leanne), and Henry Blanchard; great-grandchildren Jasmine Young (Paul), Adrienne Young, Mackenzie Young, Mya Schlesinger, Elias Blanchard, Jackson Blanchard, Benjamin Blanchard, and Lillian Blanchard; nephew Andrew Towns; nieces Carolyn Lowery, Carolyn Hanna, Denise Avery, and Linda Allen; along with a host of cousins, extended family members, spiritual sons and daughters, church family, friends, and loved ones whose lives were forever changed by his ministry and example.
A special tribute is extended to the members of Solid Rock Church of God in Christ. You were more than members to him—you were family. Your prayers, faithfulness, support, and love brought him tremendous joy throughout his years of ministry.
Today, we celebrate not only the life he lived but the legacy he left behind. His sermons still speak. His prayers still echo. His teachings still guide. His influence still inspires. His faith still points others to Christ.
From the fields of North Carolina to the battlefields of World War II and the Korean War; from the Naval Air Rework Facility to the pulpit of Solid Rock Church of God in Christ; from Assistant Superintendent and Financial Secretary to Superintendent, Superintendent William Haywood Blanchard lived a life of extraordinary purpose and uncommon faithfulness.
One hundred and six years of life.
Sixty-two years of pastoral ministry.
More than fifty years of district leadership.
Nearly four decades of revival ministry.
A life of service.
A life of sacrifice.
A life of significance.
A life well lived.
His race is finished.
His crown is won.
And Heaven rejoices as a faithful servant comes home.
