William Carlton Freeman, affectionately called Moose, was born on January 19, 1938 to the late William Henry and Mary L. Freeman. He peacefully went home to meet the Lord on Sunday, March 25, 2018, surrounded by his loving family and friends.
William was an active member of St Thomas A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served on various ministries, such as the Willing Workers Ministry, and the Food Bank H.O.P.E. Ministry. He also sang in the Men's Choir, and was a sexton for the church. William grew up in Campostella with his parents, his brothers of which Leon Freeman preceded him in death, and his sister Caroldine F. Lee who also preceded him in death. He attended Booker T. Washington High School, where he played football and baseball.
William enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955 during the Korean War, and after his honorable discharge he moved to NYC to pursue a career with the Department of Education. During this time, he participated in his local union, and played baseball. And oh, how he loved winning many trophies. He continued to work hard in his area of interest, and later retired after 32 years of loyal service. He was also one of the last presidents of the Norfolk Hawthorne Club in NYC.
William was a man who never complained. When asked how he was doing, he would quickly reply; "I'm fine." He was the person you would turn to when you needed help, and if he couldn't do it, he would connect you with the right person. We will miss him dearly, but his memory will live on in our hearts.
William Carlton Freeman leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 30 years, Lizzie Moore-Freeman; his brother, Rodney Clark (Cheryl) of Virginia Beach; his beloved sons, Reginald Freeman (Denise) of Virginia Beach, and Anthony Freeman (Winter) of Chesapeake; daughters, Lisa Mitchell (Wilfred) of Portsmouth, Stephanie Freeman of NYC, and Wynitia Freeman Wilson (Jermel) of NYC; step daughters, Charlesia Moore-Dixon (Donnie) of NYC, Pattie Moore of Albany, NY, and Lee Sandra Abney (Rev. Warren Abney) of NYC; stepsons, Gerry Foster (Malinda) of Reno Nevada, Gregory Gay of Norfolk, and Derrick Gay (Gayle) of Suffolk; thirty three grandchildren, and thirty great grandchildren; a lifelong friend, Sylvester Williams, and a host of nieces, nephews, other loving relatives, and friends.
