Obituary

Bishop Willie Earl Powell, of Simsboro, Louisiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026, in Norfolk, Virginia.Willie Earl was a proud graduate of Grambling High School and was baptized at Fellowship Baptist Church in Louisiana at an early age. He honorably served his country in the United States Air Force for 4 years, followed by 19 years, 8 months, and 17 days in the United States Navy. During his distinguished military career, he received numerous awards and commendations, including the Republic of Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation with one bronze star, and the M-16 Rifle Sharpshooter Ribbon, among others.After retiring from military service, Willie continued his strong work ethic in civilian life, working at Norshipco and later at Dollar Tree.A devoted man of faith, Willie served as a Deacon at Straight Gate Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Reverend Horace Allen. He later answered the call to ministry and became Pastor, founding Unity Outreach Ministry in Chesapeake, Virginia, alongside his wife, Apostle Laura Powell.In his leisure time, Willie found joy in singing, watching football, and bowling. He had a heart for service, often feeding the homeless and extending help to those in need. Known as a provider and protector, Willie was always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether offering guidance, support, or fixing what was broken, he never hesitated to serve others with love and generosity.He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Willie Esther Powell; brothers, Frederick Powell, LaMoyne Powell, Samuel Powell, and Bertrand Powell; sisters, Ruth Gilmore and Mavis Carter; his blessed to him children; sons, Terry Robinson and James Williams; daughter, Creola Fanning; and his grandson, Juawann Coward.He leaves to cherish his memory; wife, Laura Powell,Brothers, Reginald Powell (Diane) and Lionel Powell (Johanna); and sisters, Nelda Beard, Daisy Smith, and Dixie Rhodes;His born to him daughters, LaQueta Powell and Tara Spencer (Gamal);Blessed to him children; Sons, Larry Robinson (Virginia), Maurice Coward, and Harry Williams;Daughters; Cynthia White (Derek), Helen Thomas (James), and LaQuanda Green (Jason);His grandchildren, Bryce, Raiden, Christian, Zara, and a host of other grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren;As well as a host of nieces, nephews, spiritual children, extended family, and dear friends.

A funeral service will be held at Pretlow & Sons Funeral Home, located at 500 Liberty Street in Chesapeake, Virginia on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 11:00 am. Viewing will be the day of the service from 10:00 am until 11:00 am.
